The town of Cortlandt has a colorful history, and was the stomping grounds for some notable early Americans like General George Washington and Benedict Arnold. This page sketches the settlement of Cortlandt during the 17th and 18th centuries, and contains a brief (and admittedly incomplete) history of the Furnace Woods area (home to the Lake Woodrock association) over the past 250 years. All of the material is copied from the book entitled, "The History of the Town of Cortlandt" copyright © 1988 by the Town of Cortlandt, and is reproduced here with permission from the town supervisor.
